12.09.2008 Today, the new version of Koebcke Exploro was officially released. It contains a wide range of updates and new functionalities, e. g. the download of files in one peace and the download of documents directly out of the preview among others. [1] New functions (1) Archive options The set of options available per archive has been complemented by two new display settings to either en- or disable both thumbnails and previews individually. In addition, a setting has been added for on-demand generation of thumbnails and preview images. The following description of the improvements achieved by the four (4) possible combinations of display settings refers to the three different sections of the current Koebcke Exploro user interface labled in the screenshot below: L: Tabular listing of documents in the selected archive T: Thumbnail display of all pages of the document selected in L P: Popup window showing previews of individual pages of the document selected in L ![]() The specification of the possible combinations of thumbnail and preview settings also use the terms native vs. non-native formats where native formats refers to PDF, TIFF and JPEG files while non-native formats comprise all other file formats. [1] Thumbnails [X], Previews [X] T is visible. [a] Native Formats [i] Click on a document in L: the thumbnails of the selected document will be displayed in T. [ii] Double-click on a document in L: like [i] but at the same time, the selected document's first page will be opened in P. [iii] Click on a thumbnail in T: the preview corresponding to the selected thumbnail is displayed in P. [iv] Double-click on a thumbnail in T: the page corresponding to the selected thumbnail is streamed to the client in PDF format for download / external viewing. [b] Non-native Formats [i] Click on a document in L: a single icon representing the type of the file stored is displayed in T. Icons dedicated to certain file types icons can be configured. For all other files a default icon will be displayed. Icons only have to exist once on the system. [ii] Double-click on a document in L: like [i] but at the same time, the underlying file is streamed to the client for download / external viewing. [iii] Click on a thumbnail in T: the underlying file is streamed to the client for download / external viewing. [iv] Double-click on a thumbnail in T: like [iii]. [2] Thumbnails [X], Previews [ ] T is visible. [a] Native Formates [i] Click on a document in L: the thumbnails of the selected document will be displayed in T. [iv] Double-click on a thumbnail in T: like [iii]. [b] Non-native Formats Like [1] [b]. [3] Thumbnails [ ], Previews [X] T is NOT visible. Instead, L extends downward across the area otherwise used by T. [a] Native Formats [i] Click on a document in L: the selected document's first page will be opened in P. [ii] Double-click on a document in L: the document file (all pages) is streamed to the client in PDF format for download / external viewing. [b] Non-native Formats [i] Click on a document in L: the underlying file is streamed to the client for download / external viewing. [ii] Double-click on a document in L: like [i]. [4] Thumbnails [ ], Previews [ ] T is NOT visible. Instead, L extends downward across the area otherwise used by T. [a] Native Formats [i] Click on a document in L: the document file (all pages) is streamed to the client in PDF format for download / external viewing. [ii] Double-click on a document in L: like [i]. [b] Non-native Formats [i] Click on a document in L: the underlying file is streamed to the client for download / external viewing. [ii] Double-click on a document in L: like [i]. (2) Preview Features The preview popup window will contain a slim, horizontal navigation bar at the top. When previewing multipage documents, this bar will provide controls for browsing / flipping back and forth between all pages of the current document. In addition, it will contain two links, one for downloading the page currently displayed, the other one for downloading all pages of the current document. Both links will result in a PDF being streamed to the client in PDF format for download / external viewing. A click on the page currently previewed will also result in this page getting streamed to the client for download / external viewing in PDF format. (3) Enhanced Import Options / on-demand Generation of Thumbnails and PreviewsThe enhancements offered in this proposal will eliminate the need to pre-generate thumbnails and previews. Adding documents to an archive will then be a matter of importing just the main document files along with their index data. If desired, the system will take over the generation of thumbnails and / or previews, depending on an archive's settings. Please note that the Koebcke Exploro application will only be able to generate thumbnails and previews from native document file formats (see section 1) ! For all other file formats, a single icon will be used to substitute the thumbnails whenever necessary. System generation of thumbnails and previews will be done either: 1. On-demand Thumbnails and / or previews will be generated whenever a user requests them in case they have not been generated previously. The mechanism will be optimized for speedy delivery of the exact item requested, i.e. the user can already preview page n of a k page document before thumbnails n+1 to k and previews 1 to k have been generated. In this case, thumbnail generation will be paused, until the preview of page n has been generated and delivered. The remaining previews will be generated subsequently (or instantly when requested). Once generated, thumbnails and previews will be stored for later use. 2. Continuously With this method, thumbnails and / or previews will be continuously generated in the background post import. If a user requests a document whose miniature representations have not been generated yet, the system will temporarily switch to on-demand mode to serve the request. 2a.
